Located in South East Asia, Cambodia is a country filled with friendly people, amazing food and the coolest buildings I have ever seen. Due to Cambodia's small population it is often overlooked when considering a trip to nearby countries like Vietnam or Thailand, but here's why it shouldn't be.
Phnom Penh, the capital city is bussling with life. It is a city of contrast, displaying authentic Kmheer culture, historic temples and one of a kind architechture. However, all of this can still be experienced while staying in a city with many restaurants, shops and a good public transport system. You will not be bored visiting Phnom Penh as there is something for all demographics. From family holidays to young solo travelers there will be something in Phnom Penh for you.
Cambodia is what I would have pictured Thailand to be like 20 years ago, before it was over run by tourism and parties, and after visiting both countries I can say for certian that enjoyed my time in Cambodia far more. One noticable difference between the two was the cost of living. It was much more affordable to stay in Cambodia than it was to stay in a well known part of Thailand like Bangkok or Phuket. Cambodia was also much less overrun by tourists so I felt I could get a better grasp of the culture and atmosphere without it having been adapted to suit foreigners.
Phnom Penh is one of a kind, however my favourite place in Cambodia has to be Siam Reap, the second largest city. The temples of Siam Reap are the most magical buildings I have ever seen. To view the temples you buy a ticket to the circular route around all 7 of the main structures and are permitted access inside. You can view all the rooms, meet real Buddhist monks and get guided tours to learn more about the history. The temples are handcrafted and carved in immensely intricate detail, and the stone walls display stories from hundereds of years ago. Take a step back in time and truly apreciate Cambodia's history by visiting the temples, including Ankor Wat, dubbed the eighth wonder of the world.
Siam Reap has many other pro's, one of which being the people. Never before have I met people with such love for their country and community. Every person we came across wanted to tell us about their home and welcomed us to their country. We were greated by smiles and never felt like unwanted tourists. Our tuk-tuk driver took us on our temple tour, showing us his favourite places and wanting to share his passion and admiration for the place he calls home. He went out of his way and provided us with water, towels and fresh fruit. This kind act was one of many that made me fall in love with Cambodia and their way of life.

However, I have never before been somewhere so reliant on tourism as Siam Riep. Due to the lack of major employers, the locals all began selling things to tourists at markets, on the side of roads or from their own homes. Tourists are Siam Reap's main source of income and with tourism rates being less than half of what they were before covid, a trip could really benefit the surrounding community.
Also, as a young girl I felt very safe in Cambodia compared to other countries in Asia an would definitely recommend it to female travelers. I learned about the different ways people live and how dependent they are on one another, showing a true sense of humanity. Cambodia has been one of my favourite countries to visit, showing herriatage, culture and a charm I will never forget.
